Professional Background

Janet commenced her career as an agricultural scientist and laboratory manager. Her career developed through senior general management roles in three universities, including being the Faculty Registrar of the Faculty of Health Sciences at La Trobe University for eight years and the General Manager of the Faculty of Land and Food Resources at the University of Melbourne for a further eight years. The latter role involved managing a $30 million budget plus extensive physical resources for a very complex Faculty located on eight campuses throughout the state of Victoria, and delivering both higher and vocational education programs, face to face on campus and by distance education. During this period, the Faculty underwent major changes, and Janet was integral in planning and executing significant organisational changes requiring liaison with the University’s leadership, State Government and rural communities.

For 10 years after this, Janet played a key leadership role in the planning, design and implementation of major organisational changes at the University of Melbourne. This included a review of student services and implementing the new model, designing and implementing a new operating model for the University based on devolved management and being the business change management lead on a major program to upgrade the University’s finance, HR and research management system and implementing new planning, budgeting and reporting modules.

During Janet’s career, she undertook a consultancy at Hasanuddin University in Indonesia to help set up teaching and research laboratories for students and staff and has conducted several departmental reviews in two universities. More recently, she has undertaken consultancies in New Zealand and Fiji to review student services and finance services. Janet now works as a consultant bringing this breadth of experience to consultancy assignments and is a Senior Honorary Fellow of the LH Martin Institute for Leadership and Management in Higher Education.
