John Steele is an Associate Consultant with HR Global Innovations specialising in leadership, change management, strategy and HR in the University and College Sectors.
Prior to working as a specialist consultant John was the Foundation Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Wollongong (UOW). Appointed in November 2012 John led the development of the new Faculty – guiding the formation of an ambitious inaugural strategic plan, establishing new academic schools, academic programs and research initiatives. In 2016 the Faculty had met or exceeded all of its strategic goals, including record growth in income, enrolments and research performance. He was also a member of the UOW Executive.
Prior to the Executive Dean role, John was the Director of HR at UOW and is respected in the sector for his leadership and depth of knowledge of the higher education environment as well as strategic insight and innovation in HR practice and change management initiatives. He has very extensive strategic management, organisational development, policy and review experience and an outstanding record of achievement in senior leadership roles.
John graduated from the University of Sydney as a Social Worker in 1978 and later completed post graduate studies in Social Administration and Human Resources Management. John also attended the 2014 Institute for Management and Leadership in Higher Education Program at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.
Prior to joining UOW in 2002 John held positions as Director of HR at the University of Western Sydney and at the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom and as a Lecturer in Human Resource Management at Griffith University in Queensland. Before moving to Higher Ed John worked as a Social Worker in family intervention and in senior national industrial relations roles in the health insurance and gas industries. John has also worked as a consultant and taught in academic programs at QUT and Griffith universities in the areas of HR Management, organisational psychology and industrial relations negotiation and advocacy.
John has been a Certified Member of the Australian Human Resources Institute since 1988 and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a Non-Executive Director of the Flagstaff Group, a leading Australian Disability Enterprise, a member of the UOW Early Start Advisory Committee, the Chevalier College Development Foundation and former Board Member of the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association.
